PRICE RISE CONSULTATION

Dont forget that the consultaion (ha!) on the proposed (ha ha!) licence and mooring fee increases closes on the 31st January. You can e-mail your comments to tellusscotland@britishwaterways.co.uk. We would urge you to do so!

Below is our response:

Whilst it is welcome news that the proposed increases are capped the association feels that any price increases during the current economic climate are inappropriate.

Whilst we appreciate that BW is charged with acting in a commercial manner we can only stress the depth of hardship that the current financial climate is having on all boat owners. However this is also coupled with the increase in fuel duty on red diesel which we fear will serve to force boat owners off the water permanently.

In light of this we would suggest that for an organisation to act in a commercial manner at this time could not possibly include price rises, which would only serve to exacerbate the problems. A more responsible action would be to freeze any price increase to help long term customers and to encourage visitors to the canal, rather than pricing them off the system.
